Sunday / Power Usage / Climate change

Nothing particularly interesting to tell today, so here is just a quick overview of my day.

I woke up at 5:30 as I volunteering as a paramedic from seven to nine. After some chatting with paramedic colleges I came home by 9:30 or so.

I decided to grab a coffee and went outside on my balcony. I read through the last pages of the newspaper I received yesterday.

My brother bought me some charcoal this week when he was buying some stuff for his girlfriends’ apartment. So I thought it might be time to have a small barbeque.

I took some steaks out of the freezer and put them into the microwave to thaw them. Meanwhile, I prepared the grill. I ate and opened up a bottle of alcohol-free wheat beer (the only one I have left) as a dessert.

After that, I did some clean up inside the apartment and checked my power and heating usage so I could make some predictions on what I will be paying over the next year.

Currently, I’m using about 11 Kilowatthoures of electricity per day. That is about the usage a normal 4 people household would have. Keep in mind, I’m living alone.

I need to figure out some stuff to save more power. Because as soon as I’m finished with the terrarium, another larger consumer (the heating lamps) is added, so the bill will rise even more. Currently, the main consumers are the network (including the NAS) and probably my Sonos Network.

The thing is, if I do some calculations, putting an automated plug on every Sonos speaker would save me power. Adding up the cost of smart power plugs exceeds the power cost of those speakers for a few years (at least four or five).

Another huge consumer is my Windows PC. Although I’m almost doing everything with my MacBook nowadays, I still keep it online, just in case I need it. I need to change my thought on that and keep it shut down if I don’t need it.

The only good thing is, 100% of my power comes from renewable sources. But if I could save more power, not only would I save money, but I would also do some “resource-saving”. The power I wouldn’t use, could somebody other use and no not-renewable energy producer would have to kick in.

On the other side, about a third of Austria’s energy comes from renewable sources anyway.
