Working on a Routine

Week five in quarantine. I think it is finally time to get rid of my snooze the alarm morning routine and develop something useful again. Or maybe even a whole day routine?

For now, the company I work at will stay at home office for at least till the end of April. Probably even longer.

My plan is to finish working by three pm or at max at four. So I have plenty of the afternoon for other stuff.

Which means starting to work at the latest 7:30. Best case would be 6:30 so let’s place it around that.

There are several things I want to achieve before starting to work:

  • getting dressed and brushing teeth (showering moved to the evenings for the time being)
  • read at least 15 minutes in a daily newspaper (I ordered a test subscription at no cost)
  • let some fresh air in and spend a few minutes on the balcony
  • prepare to start working (turn on the MacBook, get some coffee, don’t check emails).

Combining all of these would probably be around an hour. So waking up at 5:30.

So I will set the alarm at 5 am. Which means going to sleep by nine pm. Which would mean I could start working at 6. The earlier I start the earlier I can stop.

By 11:30 I will have to take my lunch break (normally 30 minutes, enforced by law). Which means continue to work from 12 till 2:30 pm.

Which would leave 6.5 hours of free time.

That means I’ve got plenty of time to watch one episode of a one-hour long tv show (currently I’m mainly watching Battlestar Galactica or Stargate SG1). I want to reduce that down to one Episode per day anyway, so why not get it into the routine?

Adding half an hour of workout, I’m left with four hours. Take another half-hour off for showering and getting ready for bed. Maybe half an hour for writing and reading on TheCowriters.

Leaves four hours for other stuff. Since I want to read more, I’m probably spending my time on that. We’ll see how that goes.
