Working from Home
Inspired by @brandonwilson ‘s Working from Home and @twizzle news from their home adventures I thought I will write about my own routines and situations a little bit.
The company I work at is currently completely switched to Home Office for two weeks now. Since we are a Software company it wasn’t really hard to do. The only thing that made problems is the Support Department which is currently running on low personnel as most of our customers had to close down.
The other departments, development, marketing, and operations are working like normal. Most of the people never worked from home as many live nearby the headquarter. So it was pretty new for all of us.
Besides the general hiccups our VPN has and some internet problems I can work relatively smooth. Although I had a larger internet outage today on my side, not sure why.
As Brandon has written, many “help” articles suggest sticking to the same routine as normal. I doubt that works for most people. Many have to commute to the company they work at.
For me, it is only a five-minute drive or a 30-minute walk. I can’t do one of the two so my routine is already “messed up”. So why shouldn’t change it up completely?
The urge to jump directly into work after waking up is also a bad habit that shouldn’t be done, so I changed my routine:
I wake up and eat breakfast while reading something. Afterwards, I take a shower and put on some comfy clothes. After that, I walk to my desk and start working. By the time I start, my mind is already ready.
If you would wake up and start working, the first hour would probably be sitting down think about anything but work.
Besides that, nothing really changed from my work schedule. Our daily standup is now a skype conference, but the rest of the day runs basically the same.
