Home automation

This Blog Post was originally published on the platform "writelier" (formerly "co-writers" and "200wordsaday"). Sadly the blogging platform was discontinued. I downloaded all my blog posts and prepared them to be republish them here.

Thanks to @tobias (Automation makes life easier) for the inspiration on today's post.

As I've mentioned before I'm going to buy an Apartment in the near future. In my current Apartment, I have a few things automated. The heaters and some of the power outlets.

Since I am going to live for several years in the new Apartment, I thought why not automate more. As I'm working as a web developer and have my school background in IT I'm fascinated about automation.

I've got several IFTTT (If this then that https://ifttt.com/) automations running, an instance of HomeAssistant (https://www.home-assistant.io/) running and did a few things with Raspberry PIs and Arduinos. So I've got some background Knowlege of (home-) automation.

What am I going to automate in the new Apartment? Well, thanks for asking:

  • the heaters inclusive door and window sensor
  • the light
  • smoke detector
  • weather station
  • probably in the future: the blinds.

I am probably going to use Philips Hue and Homematic IP. I worked with Homematic before and the Hue Lights are just great. Both can integrate with Home Assistant so I can control everything from a web interface and through a software bridge also all from Apples Homekit (as I've got an iPad).

As soon as I'm starting with the automation I'm probably going to craft several blog posts about it so if you're interested, you can follow along. :)
