Employer Visit

Yesterday I visited my new employer (Employer Change Yours Truly) I asked Christoph if he would come along, so I didn't have to drive the 305 kilometres (per direction) alone. He agreed and so we started at lunchtime.

The drive took us to the next Superchargerin Wiener Neustadt, where we ate lunch. Afterwards, we took off heading to Linz. Interestingly we didn't need another Supercharger stop so we could drive directly to my new employer. There was a cheap charger right in front of their door, so I parked the car and plugged it in. Christoph went to a nearby coffee shop while I was going into the office.

HR quickly let me in and showed me around the office. Interestingly the planning for the next two months was going on, so I got a great insight into how meetings are held (when they're held in person). I got a coffee, and then I got my shiny new Macbook Pro. Although it is the cheapest one (13 inch, M1, 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD), it should be more than enough. I also received a MagicMouseand an HDMI adapter to connect my 4K Display.

After the meeting finished, I met with the CTOand my team colleague, who introduced me to a few people. We sat on a couch, and the CTO and my colleague started to talk about some things PostgresSQL. I think I made a good impression as I began to speak along with them and hopefully contributed something interesting for them. :)

I'm impressed by the size of the office. They are inside an old tobacco company on the 6th floor. You get an excellent overview of Linz when looking out of the windows. They moved into this new office just a few months ago, so cables were showing, ACs were not working, and other stuff was lying around. I think the space can at least accommodate approximately 50 people. According to HR, most of the time, 5 to 10 are around (most of the workforce is in homeoffice). The most exciting thing I discovered is that they've got a beer tap that is part of a bar where you also get coffee and other beverages. Because the space is so ample, they use it to party from time to time after work.

It is so strange to come from an open-plan office to such an open space. There are video call boxes (which are soundproof), several meeting offices and a bunch of tables where you can sit down and start working.

After one and a half hours, I met with Christoph in the cafe and afterwards, we drove to the next supercharger nearby, where we had dinner (Asian All you can eat). Another stop in Wiener Neustadt again, and I was back in my Apartment at around 10:15 pm.

Of course, I couldn't go to sleep without unpacking the MacBook, so it was 11:30 when I got into the shower and fell asleep afterwards.

Considering my experience yesterday, I'm even more excited about changing to them soon.
